This year, almost every family has had a taste of what it is like to educate their child at home. Some families have found it very difficult, because it was not their choice. It was thrust upon them with very little notice, preparation, resources or help. Others, though, enjoyed the experience so much that they have made the decision, or are considering to educate their child at home instead of sending them to school.
Lockdown homeschooling and elective home education are not the same thing. Homeschooling was an emergency solution to extraordinary circumstances. It would have worked well as a temporary cover until normal school resumed. But the longer it went on, the more parents may have felt frustrated at not being able to help their children as they struggled to do the work set.
Home education, however, is a deliberate, long-term strategy that is tailor-made to a child’s interests, ability and circumstances. Learning can be delivered in a variety of ways and is paced to enhance family life. Parents are fully involved and have total control over what is taught.
At High Winds Life we offer a range of services for families who have chosen or are considering home education from advice and support for parents to tuition for children.
