Set Goals and See the Victory

What wellness goals have you set yourself and have you achieved them? Sometimes the things we want to do to improve our sense of well being can seem difficult and it can be hard to know where to start. We can end up feeling disheartened because we keep failing to achieve the tasks we have set ourselves.

So how do we gain the victory when it comes to well being (or any part of our lives for that matter)?

Step One - Dream Big

The first step is to know what we want the end result to be. We need to see the big picture in our minds eye. What do you want to achieve and why? Hold onto that dream because, when the going gets tough, that dream will motivate you to push through. Without motivation it will be hard to commit to what you have to do in order to see the results.

Step Two - Break it Down

Next, you need to break down your goal into small, manageable tasks. For example if your dream is to improve your fitness levels so that you have more energy to play with your kids, where do you start with that?

Well you might need to make changes to your diet so that what you eat provides you with the energy and nutrients that you need to fuel your day. You could break that down further. Perhaps the first step is to eat a good breakfast each day that will help to stabilise your blood sugar levels. Changing your diet may seem overwhelming, but eating a nutritious breakfast is a small, measurable step that is easy to achieve.

Step Three - Celebrate the Small Things

Step three is to celebrate your small victories. Celebrate the fact that you have managed to eat a good breakfast every day for a whole week because now you are a step close to your end goal. Celebrate the fact that you have managed to walk a bit further than you normally do or that you have been feeling more positive.

These small victories are not insignificant. In fact they are hugely important. Acknowledging your small successes will motivate you to take on the next small challenge and it will also help you to feel good about yourself.

Step Four - Be Kind to Yourself

When it comes to health and well being, we often have to change our habits and lifestyle in order to achieve the end result that we desire. Habit change takes time. Step number four is to be kind to yourself. Don't beat yourself up if you fail, but rather forgive yourself and let those failures go.

Maybe you have been doing really well with your breakfast challenge and have kept it up for a whole month, but today you woke up late and it was a mad dash to get ready for work so you just grabbed a coffee and a couple of biscuits - that's okay. Focus on how well you have done up until now and let it motivate you for tomorrow. A failure is really only a failure if don't get back up and try.

Be kind to yourself and stay focused on your dream. Before long you will be living that dream and celebrating your wonderful victory.
